The r3d is better than onboard sure, but I wouldn't swap a working ti out for it, just for drivers, especially when the ti's drivers are actually more up to date. The r3d is too much of a compromise for me to call a good card, although integrating the analog components might lessen the chance of getting faulty hardware, or hardware related bugs, which did occasionally happen with the old pci x-fi's. It's the combination of the two that's getting Creative the improved reviews, and of course a good soundcard will cost more than $35. The new drivers are dumbed down and the sb-z is better hardware. AFAIK, the TI's did not suffer from those bugs. The problems that used to exist with the old pci x-fi's weren't driver related, as the scp's were symptoms of motherboards with bad pci implementations, and they had bad mic implementations that could easily amplify noise/interference. If you play around with it, the new drivers actually removed some features from the old x-fi, (while adding others), and there was nothing really wrong with the old drivers. Especially when they can exhibit weird problems like johnson said. I've dealt with both generations of cards, and I don't see how the new drivers are any "better" than the old ones, other than personal preference and the placebo effect.
